Directory SubmissionsYou may have heard that Google is not going to give any importance to directory submissions. This started a lot of discussions in SEO professionals and website owners that having links in directories does not count any worth. They thought that it will give a negative effect on their SEO results and rankings. In this article I will try to explain why Google removed the recommendation.

So lets begin with talking on some points where directories affect your ranking. Directories are allowing you to submit your site so the visitors can find a good resource to their requirement. The listing is having a link of your website and this is the reason that can affect your ranking. Directories helps in increasing the link counts and therefore increases the strength of your website, theoretically.

So Google has stopped giving any importance to the directory links then it will surely affect the website rankings. So what is the good reason behind removing this recommendation from webmasters guidelines? People thought that Google were to create their own directory which will not be based on DMOZ but this was just a  rumor. Getting back to the question, has Google stopped counting Directory Links? MATT CUTTS, Google spokesperson and the one whom I follow from couple of last years and the regular reader of his Blog, answered my question. Matt says that there is always a chance that Google may devaluate these links but the good reason behind that was they were observing that lots of beginners were submitting their website to n number of poor quality directories.

I think you are pretty safe right now but you should keep building links in different ways and make a good quality website. Google will devaluate these type of links which are from low quality directories so if you just submit the directories to quality directories to keep yourself safe in future.

  1. The origins of Google’s algorithm for using links to a web sit comes from research journals. It is an old practice that was used as the basis of page ranking. When a research paper in ‘good standing’ references another paper, they are both now in good standing.
    Nothing new about Google algorithm!
