Directory SubmissionsThese days, you will see lots of SEO experts saying that directory submission are dead and does not counts any worth as like it was to be in couple of last years. Well, this is true to some extent, but it is still possible to rank well in Google search engine through directory submission. However, you should do directory submission to quality directories and this is a little bit tricky part. There are lots of directories but they aren’t worth your time. If you are good with searching then try to find quality directories where you can submit your site, you will be able to rank your website for competitive three word-long keyword phrases.

How to Tell Whether a Directory is Legit?

To get started with directory submission, first you should search for the directories which are related to your niche on one of the major search engines. If you find relevant directories that rank highly on Google, then this is a good sign. Directories that have good value in search engine counts worth for buying the links. If possible, try to avoid free directories because lots of them are not having a good reputation in search engine. However, there are exceptions to this rule of course.

In one more way, you can check the quality of a directory is by examining the submissions and seeing if there are any good sites or not. If you only find low quality linking, sites with low ranking, then it is just a waste of time. You should also make sure that the crawl date of the index page and another page in the directory for the reason that if it has been more than a month, chances are that search engines don’t trust that specific directory. Search engines like Google make manual adjustments so as to diminish links from spammy directories.

Directory Submission Tips

If you want to keep yourself on good side of Google, then do not submit your site to several directories at a time. Give a brake to your submissions for couple of months. Search engines knows this well that SEOs use directory submissions to build links and improve page ranking so keep your campaign simple to avoid being penalized. For example, avoid copy-paste of similar anchors and descriptions on every directory submission. Try changing your directory listings slightly to make your efforts seem less obvious. Take care that your anchor text includes your business name. Don’t use a target keyword alone because it looks suspicious. For example, if you own Web Hosting Company, make sure your anchor text says something like, “Bod Host UK Dedicated Servers“, not something as generic as, “UK Dedicated Servers”.

Directories were one of an easiest ways for SEOs to achieve higher Google rankings but Google took some action to ensure that directory submission would no longer be abused. Generic directories that exist only for selling links possess a big minus in Google’s eyes because they provide little value to users. Google is always interested in providing highly valuable search results so it’s not a surprise that Google devalues links submitted to sub-par directories.

High Quality Directories

Yahoo Directory Yahoo Directory and DMOZ are the only top directories. It sounds to be pretty expensive when it comes on paying around $299(annual fee) to get listed in Yahoo as of this writing but the investment counts worth. It is not important to submit to the Yahoo directory to rank on Yahoo but it will boost your Yahoo ranking if you do so. Google also trust Yahoo directory. From couple of last years it was hard to get listed in Yahoo but due to recent economy troubles, it has become easy to get accepted, as long as you pay.

DMOZ,The Open Directory Project (ODP)DMOZ, also called The Open Directory Project (ODP), is one of the biggest categorized directories of websites and pages, which is maintained by volunteers. Every website and page that is added to the directory is manually reviewed before it is included to the directory. The listing of a website in DMOZ is completely FREE.  You can learn here more on How To Submit Your Site Into DMOZ. Other respected directories include Business.com, the Librarians Internet Index, and GoGuides.

Page RankLots of webmasters are either clicking their heels or kicking their LCDs. Google’s Pagerank Update is sweeping world wide and apparently, a lot of people lost overhyped pagerank than gained. That’s where all the heat’s blowing from.

I myself lost ranking at my two sites (dropped to PR4, PR1), gained at two (accelerated to PR5), and the rest stayed idle.

For those who lost, don’t worry It isn’t the day of a judgment. PR drop doesn’t certainly mean SERP drop. I know. I’ve seen PR drop before and my SERP stayed the same or in reality increased.

Now for those who dropped, here are a few strategies to keep up and improve the traffic you still ask for:

  • Roll out the Classified ads- Maintain posting classifieds online and offline. Adsense, Turn over and yeah- bumper stickers will drive paying customers to your site. Just verify you got great stuff to keep your site sticky.
  • RSS submission -Even as content is a king, RSS is queen in a world of info excess. Most people  fire up their feedburners, snarfers and aggregators daily. Take care that you’re ahead on the RSS train.
  • Article submission- I snagged lots of backlinks to my NLP , SEO Consulting and Executive Coaching sites by submitting on a regular basis to Article Directories. These backlinks continue to multiply when lots of people copy the articles to their blogs and webs. Think of it as a safetynet of votes to your site even though primary link partners go belly up.
  • Press release submission- Submitting pr to associated newswebs can bring reporters writing you up in the dailies, not just online. This brings new life into the dead electrons of your web.
  • Forums signatures- For sure, they don’t get you PR juice. But who is concerned? If people like what you post, they’ll follow your signature and spend time on your site.
  • Blog Submission- Look at Connected Internet’s wide readership and considerable revenues.
  • Directory submission- We all know directories have lost PR weight. Fact is, paid directories have either dropped in ranking or been deindexed. However, there’s still marginal usefulness to getting your links on the directories: you catch up the random visitor.
  • Ebook submission- Submitting free ebooks to a few software repository sites got me numerous backlinks when grinning freeloaders started posting them on their webs. You’ll improve ranking faster than you can say “pagerank” a lot of times.
  • Pad file submission- Quickly fetch the attention to your blog by releasing killer apps to download.com. Adobe.com got its PR9 by releasing free software- the adobe acrobat reader. With lots of copies floating the web, it’s no surprise that their PR soars. with good reasons.
  • Video upload- A few of mine still creep around Youtube and lassoo hardly stayed  into the ole corral.
  • Social bookmarking- Technorati. Digg. Newsvine.  Web 2.0 technologies make it likely to launch viral marketing campaigns and not even need to take much effort.

Go Ahead!!!

directory submissionsYou cannot afford to go left! Directory submission have to be done right so as to grab the benefit from this important link building technique. There are thousands and thousands of link directories out there where you can submit your site or blog too. But out of that many thousands of directories, only a fraction essentially offers the real backlink and some PR benefit.

There was time when directory submission would work like magic when it comes to link building. It still does work to some level but not to the extent that it used to be before. Tremendous competition pretty much exhausted all the traditional link building methods and to stay competitive in the game, one needs to do more than what others doing; both in terms of quality and quantity. Some may say it’s the quality of backlinks that matter and not the quantity, I would say they both matter. If I have only a small number of good quality links and my competition has more good quality links than me along with a lot of Ok quality links, I’m the one who is behind in the game. So even with good quality backlinks, one needs as many of them as possible till the competition is beaten. .

First most important step in directory submission would be to find as many niche blogs as possible and submit the site to them. Niche directories are a new trend and by now, there are niche specific directories in almost all major niches. Submitting the site to those directories will give you relevant backlinks which will be more valued for ranking purpose.

Once you are finished with submitting to a lots of niche directories as much as you can, next thing you need to do is to compose a list of all high ranking directories with as many backlinks as possible. More backlinks a directory has, more frequent Googlebot visits the directory and better chance you have for quick indexing of your link. High ranking directories also pass higher value link juice.

If you are reading this far and still wondering what is the world is being talked on this article or what do the terms directory submission and link building mean, the you should know that a site needs to be properly optimized with as many backlinks as possible being pointed to the site to rank high in search engines. Higher the site ranks, better flow of traffic there will be meaning more viewers/readers and more revenue for money making webmasters.

One last thing I would like to touch up on is deeplink directory submissions. Away from niche directory and general directories, there are deeplink directories that accept deeplink submissions with some only accepting deeplink submissions. It would be useful to spend a little time in finding as many directories as possible and compose a large deeplink directory list. Once the list is ended, you can start submitting your inner pages and/or social media pages to these directories.

So if you would like to get good benefit out of directory submissions, spend a lot of time on the web searching for a lot of directories as possible, arrange them out by priority, and carry on submitting. Take a slow and steady approach and don’t go overboard by submitting to 4,000 directories in a month and nothing on the second month. It is more worthwhile that you submit to 1,000 or 2,000 directories over the course of 2-3 months. In this way the link building campaign would give the impression of being lot more natural and organic in the eyes of search engines.

SEO Tips for GoogleGetting a high ranking on Google is a big success. There are a lot of factors that go into pulling a high page rank. I have composed a small list of things that should not be ignored when optimizing your site. Let’s begin from the top:

META Tags- Sorry to say but Google doesn’t read META tags. That includes the KEYWORD tag. Some search engines, however, still use them.

URL- Having a keyword or words in URL will help you to some extent. Having a key word in your URL is not by any means a assurance, but it never hurts.

TITLE Tag- This is an most important step, make use of this tag wisely. Place your top keywords here. Keep in mind, your page is indexed starting from the top of the page. Make this one count.

Site Content- The first section of your site is a important part of your optimization. This will also be used as your site’s description. Be cautious not to exceed on the keywords. Make sure your content makes logic. Your keywords should make up a total of 6% to 8% of your page content. A standard of three hundred words is a excellent rule of thumb.

Header Tags- Header tag < H1 > must be considered important. Make headers uniform on your site. I like using them on the top of my page just before the first paragraph.

ALT Tags- These tags are great for adding up keywords to images, so take benefit of them. I also use mouse over text with linked text.

Links- Any links you have on your site should cover key terms in them. Never use “Click Here” or other unrelated words when creating links.

Bonus tip: When exchanging text links, make use of key phrases as the actual links. This will positively help you out.

Links exchange- This will help to increase your overall ranking. It’s actually better to be linked from another site (one way) than reciprocal (both sites linking to each other). Being linked one way is a huge bonus. Though, the following should be kept in mind.

A: The site you are linking to needs to be related to your site.
B: Google’s page rank of the site should be higher than yours; the higher the better.
C: Stay away from linking to sites that have too many links. A site that has forty or more links will only hurt you.

Bonus Tip: See where you rank on Google by using this free tool. http://www.googlerankings.com/ultimate_seo_tool.php

This Google ranking tool will give you an idea about what keywords you are found on. Use this to help change the keywords you want to be found under. Be sure to check your ranking before you start any optimization. Then do it again 3, 4 weeks after you have completed your adjustments. See if your ranking has gone up.

Search EnginesThe important truth is to get noticed by search engines rather than competitors. However, not everyone knows what they need to be better at. There are certain things you need to impliment when it comes down to search engine optimization. Its not important to be the best on the internet, you need to be the best than the people you are competing on your keywords. Utilize the following terms to be number one in the search engine results.

Pick the Right Url

The first step in getting high search engine rankings begins even before you build your website. You need to pick a site name that has something to do with the products or services you will be offering. For example, if you are selling dog collars, you may not want your website named Cats_R_Us.com. You should think about the keywords you will want to target, and try to incorporate them into your site name.

Name Your Pages Correctly

When you are building your website, you should include the best page names possible. Don’t use page titles like “home page”, and “about us”. You should include your keywords in your page titles. For example instead of “Home Page” you could say “Contact Dubai Home”, or you could use “About Contact Dubai “. Try to use your keywords as much as you can when naming your web pages.

Optimize Your Meta Tags

Meta tags are an important part of getting your site ranked high in the search engines. Meta keywords and meta phrases are some of the first things that search engine spiders see when crawling your website. These should be optimized to include the keywords or phrases you think best describe your website page. Each page will have its own metas and they should be optimized for what is on that page. Make sure you keep these up to date as you make changes to pages and discontinue products or services.

Optimize Your On Page Text

If you are writing the text on your page, you should include your keywords as a natural part of the page. Do not stuff the page with keywords, but make sure they are included. On average, a good number is to include your keywords 4% of the time. This means that a 500 word page would have your keywords listed 20 times. This should be done naturally, as a part of the headers and the text. The keys should be used in a grammatically correct way and never use improper spelling.

Age of Site

While you can’t make your site older than it really is, this is something to consider. Do not change your website every few months. Some people do this. They get fed up with a site because it isn’t working and they start something new. The problem is that search engines do look at your websites age as a factor for ranking it. This doesn’t mean that a new site cannot get high ranks. It just means that in the same way you get higher ranks after months of building links, age will also raise your search engine rankings.

These are just a few of the ways you can build you site to get higher search engine rankings. There are dozens more ways today. The key is to create a user friendly site that convinces visitors to stay and buy while they are there. After all, it does no good to bring in 20,000 visitors if you can only close two sales.

Website Promotion

It takes time, dedication and hard work to build a successful web business. To understand how web business works, one must understand various ways of optimization, marketing and ranking. As it takes long time to research and properly optimize a website, it frequently requires a well organized and managed team.

Luckily, website promotion software is helpful in a variety of ways: from keyword density to search engine optimization and page ranking. Ultimately, a good website promotion software package can help skyrocket a website’s page views. Most software promotion packages dive into things like search engine optimization, search engine marketing, article marketing, website promotion and website ranking.

Search Engine Optimization

SEO is one of the most important strategically advantageous things a webmaster can do for optimal search engine indexing. SEO is the process of configuring your HTML’s META tags and properly placing keywords and keyword phrases on each page of the website. The utilization of analytical software can help pinpoint the best keywords to fully optimize a website. As a webmaster or marketer, you have specific keywords that you believe will help optimize your website. Be aware, however, that not all minds think alike. It is important to consider other points of view and website promotion software for a wider variety of keywords.

Search Engine Marketing

SEM is a form of marketing that promotes online businesses or websites. Various forms of SEM include SEO, paid inclusion and paid search engine placement. The use of tools provided by search engines can help provide more visibility in search engine result pages, or SERPs. Tools such as Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter are some of the most popular SEM vendors. Research can help determine which search engine marketing strategy may benefit your website the most. Keywords, SEO, back links and other promotional tools play a large part in the success of any website.

Article Marketing

Article marketing is a quickly growing marketing strategy. Using articles to market a website, product or service is an excellent way to get more traffic to your website. Many article submission websites offer ghostwriting as an inexpensive service to all clients. Some even offer the ability to write your own article and have a professional ghostwriter rewrite it for you. The ideal article is about 500 words and descriptive, but not product-specific. Product-specific articles often come across as spam. Each article may contain an “author’s resource box,” which holds the author’s name, website address and brief description of the website.

Website Promotion

Website promotion is more than simply getting good search engine rankings. Effective website promotion can change the way people view your website. You must make the effort to differentiate your website from similar websites. The efforts put forth for a successful website promotion campaign can mean the difference between a successful website and one that fails. Promotion techniques include SEO, SEM, informational articles and possibly a link building campaign. There is a variety of website promotion software that can help determine what is needed for specific websites to flourish.

Website Ranking

Website ranking is important! Over the years, it’s been proven that most people who use search engines do not pass the second page before searching for a new keyword or phrase. Page one ranking is optimal, but page two can render favorable consequences as well. In order to achieve high rankings, several key issues must fall into place.

•    The HTML and other code required to run the website must be W3 compliant.

•    The website must be properly optimized for unsurpassed search engine indexing.  Proper use of keywords and keyword phrases is key here.

•    The website description must be compelling to readers.

•    The website must prove to be popular by having quality links from other websites. This may be achieved by means of article marketing and directory submissions.

•    Paid advertising on other popular, and related, websites can be an integral part of achieving high ranking and page views.

Choosing the Best Website Promotion Software

Choosing the best software is similar to choosing the best domain name for your website. Your website is as unique as you. It deserves special treatment to help you achieve your goals. Choosing the best software to fit your needs may not be as simple as purchasing the most popular. When making the decision, keep the tips in this article in mind. Every successful website needs the basics: SEO, SEM, useful information, promotion and ranking. Keep an eye out for software that will give you the most bang for the buck. Some offer keyword and META tag SEO only, while others scan your entire site and offer suggestions to improve ranking and page views.

I deal with many questions from curious website owners everyday. One question I have a new answer for is, “Should I use META tags on my site when do search engine optimization?” Old Answer: It couldn’t hurt, but don’t worry about them, the search engines ignore them for the most part. New answer? Read on…

Should I really use a META tag? Really?

The new answer is yes, you should use META tags on your site. The keyword META tag is still not used by search engines but when submitting to directories, a valuable use of time by the way, the META keywords are used in many cases to automatically fill in the keywords for your site in that directory.

Even more amazingly, the META description tag has soared in importance. How so you ask? Google has started showing the META description in its search results when certain criteria are met.

The criteria being used appears to be very simple, unlike many of the other things Google does. When the keyword or search terms appear in the META description, the META description is used instead of the snippet of text containing the keyword on your page.

For example, if you do a search in Google for ‘Big Oak SEO’ you will see our site in the first listing and the description used is our META description tag. All three words being searched for are also in our META description.

If you do a search for ‘big oak client’ you will see the first listing is pulling a snippet of text from the page itself. Since ‘client’ is not in our META description, it uses a snippet of text from the page where all three words can be found.

Where should you use a META description tag?

Every website should use a META description tag on the home page at the very least. This way you can say exactly what you want and not worry the snippet of text being used is not best choice for your message. What this really means is Google is giving us some measure of control.

And now that we have this knowledge and control, how best to use it? This allows us to take off our search engine optimizer hats and don our search engine marketer hats. Think of what you can say in the brief sentence that will entice a user to click your link rather than the one above or below. You can put your phone number in the META description for starters or how about being really creative and offer a discount or advertise a sale. Tell them your unique selling proposition. It should be a one sentence phrase already in your head. The only caveat to remember is that your META description will only show if the search term is in the META description. While this can be tricky, it can be done with some forethought. You can do this for all of your targeted pages and have dozens of marketing messages.

Use the META description wisely: target your market and entice your customers. Do not abuse this control and put outlandish, untrue or slanderous statements as I am sure Google will be watching; and if this technique is abused the META description may have seen it last search result this time.

Unluckily, lots of Search Engine Optimization companies don’t know what this involves. You may see a combined package, the dreaded “Submit Your Site to 1000’s of Search Engines” scam, or even link popularity development in the form of submitting to link farms. Throughout the basic premise of each of these ideas is true, the process of executing them is extremely important

Most important is, your web site needs human attention. A real person should completely analyze your site before starting any work. Get them on the phone and ask them questions. There should be a clean and clear process that the Search Engine Optimization company uses and tailors to each client. The SEO company should also have a clear idea of what is the specified structure for your web site.

The first important step in any work that is done should be “keyword research”. Like any kind of advertising, you need to know where your target market goes and how they find businesses like yours. The keywords chosen should apply to the theme of the web site. High rankings for these keywords should also be obtainable given your budget. If you are a computer repair shop with one or two locations in a city and can not service computers outside your area, then targeting a term such as “computer repair” is overkill. The cost for obtaining high rankings for a term such as that will be far greater than what you will make from the exposure, as much of your web site traffic will not be targeted enough.

Once keywords have been chosen for the web site, the content should be updated to reflect them. This may include subtle changes to the meta tags, page titles and text headings; or it could involve adding additional sections to the site, rewriting content and reorganizing the web site’s structure. It all depends on the specific requirements of the site and market.

Once the on-page content optimization is complete, link popularity development needs to be done. A link development campaign should be done to acquire quality incoming links to the web site. This phase of search engine optimization should take place as soon as possible and can be continued as needed. Reciprocal linking is fine as long as some caution is used. There are many sketchy services out there that use huge networks of gambling and pharmacy sites with no unique content. Always make sure that each incoming link can be interpreted by the search engines as a ‘vote’ by that site for yours. It is worthless and possibly dangerous if the site links out to link farms and Free-For-All sites (FFA’s). Writing articles with a link to your web site, getting people to post on forums and message boards, and advertising or getting links to drive targeted traffic to your site are great methods to use in improving your link popularity.

For the most part, you get what you pay for with Search Engine Optimization. A quick fix will rarely works, and if it seems too good to be true it probably is. Talk to the search engine optimization company about your concerns and make sure they understand your goals. Read their site and make sure they seem legitimate. Ask for results they’ve obtained for previous clients. Methods that not effective and have a chance to get a site banned include hiding text or links, participating in link farms, keyword stuffing, repeat search engine submissions, and copying web sites to multiple domains.

Proper SEO does not involve tricks. Web sites that have well written and well focused content, have been advertised in one way or another (including link popularity development), and overall are a good informational resource will get traffic from the search engines. Search engines are constantly updating ways to weed out the spamming and illegal SEO methods, so think long term with any search engine optimization campaign.
